George A. Carey, Jr., 89, of Evansville passed away peacefully late Monday evening August 27, 2012 at Health South Rehabilitation Center.

Following graduation from high school George worked at Grumman Aircraft Corporation until the outbreak of WWII at which time he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served the duration of the war until his Honorable Discharge as a Staff Sergeant in 1946. Upon his return home he worked for a time at Long Island Lighting Company until realizing his ambition to enter police work. George will always be remembered as a very gentle, highly principled man with a ready and luminous smile, and never an unkind word to say about anyone. He was selfless and always looked to understand and support, and did so with tremendous empathy and compassion. These traits were used to particular advantage in his capacities as the director of one of the Police Boys Club units responsible for mentoring the youth of the community and as a court liaison officer. All told, he devoted almost thirty-two years as a Nassau County, NY Police Officer and retired as a Sergeant.

His was a long life filled with enjoyment and love for family and friends. This enthusiasm even extended to the entire animal world and his many beloved pets. George will be missed greatly, but all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by him will remember his legacy of strength with sensitivity.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Carey in 2007; son, James Carey in 2010 and his brother, Joseph Carey.

George is survived by his daughters, Linda Accardi (Anthony) of Port Charlotte, FL, Patricia Broe (Barry) of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Dr. William G.
